SIMPLE TIPS FOR LIVING GREENER

  • Swap out incandescent bulbs for compact fluorescent bulbs. CFs use about 66% less energy and last up to 10 times longer.
  • Recycle whenever possible. Recycling just one aluminum can saves the amount of energy required to run a TV for three hours.
  • Say no to junk mail — 100 million trees’ worth are sent out each year.

  • Turn down your thermostat by two degrees in the winter (and up two degrees in the summer). You’ll save 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide this year.
  • Take reusable tote bags when you go shopping — you could keep up to 1,500 bags per year out of landfills.
  • When you go out for coffee, bring a reusable insulated mug.
  • Walk or bike wherever possible. The earth and your body will thank you.
  • If it’s too far to walk, take public transportation. If you must drive, consider a hybrid or energy-efficient vehicle.
  • Visit farmers’ markets and other sources for local produce to cut down on the negative effects of long-distance food transportation.
  • Turn off your PC at night. Use a laptop instead of a desktop computer, and cut 75% of your electrical use.
  • Switch to cold-water washing and save 80% on laundry energy.
